 So You Want to Be a Teacher Minimize
To earn a Level I teaching Certificate (and start teaching)

  • Complete 4 or 5 years at a college/universtiy which is an approved school of teacher education.
  • Complete a student teaching or intern experience as part of that program.
  • Pass the Praxis I and Praxis II assessments.
To continue teaching beyond 6 years
  • Complete 24 semester credits (graduate or undergraduate level) or 24 PDE-approved IU credits beyond their initial bachelor’s degree.
To earn a Master's Degree

  • 30-36 graduate credits at an accredited institution including a Master's paper or Thesis.

To continue to teach in Pennsylvania

  • Beginning July 1, 2000, Act 48 of 1999 requires people holding Pennsylvania professional educator certification to complete continuing education requirements every five years in order to maintain their certificates as active. Educators must maintain their certificates as active by earning six collegiate credits or six PDE-approved in-service credits or 180 continuing education hours or any combination of the above.
 

      

Back in Black

Teachers return to school in August 2006 wearing black to remind everyone we are still without a contract after a year's negotiations.

 Strike

Teachers are left with no option but to strike in October 2006 to try to convince board and community that a fair contract is needed.
