Summer of Learning for Littlestown Teachers

Teachers in Littlestown are earning more than 100 graduate credits in dozens of different classes during the summer of 2007.  In addition, Littlestown teachers have attended Governor’s Schools, managed art and academic academies, and studied a variety of subjects to improve their effectiveness in classroom and community.

Amanda Smith of Rolling Acres completed a graduate Assessment course toward her English as a Second Language certification from Shippensburg University.

Mary Malewicki, and Jeanne Baublitz are taking The Write Foundation – Six Plus One Traits of Writing, a course from the University of St. Thomas, Minnesota, in teaching primary students the basics of writing successfully. 

Nancy Smith, RA third grade teacher, devoted some of her summer to self-education, purchasing and absorbing several texts on the teaching of gifted and advanced students so she can better serve her classes this year.

Reading Specialists Deb Meckley and Carrie Soliday took a three-credit graduate course, Comprehensive Literacy, from Shippensburg University.   Administrators Larry Ott and Tim Mitzel also audited the course.

Heather Green, fourth grade teacher at Alloway Creek, is pursuing her Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Shippensburg University. This summer, she earned six graduate credits with Teaching Science in the Elementary School and Advanced Child Development.

Third Grade Reading Support teacher Betsy Bein completed a six credit practicum toward her Reading Specialist Masters degree at McDaniel College. 

Heather Fowler completed two graduate classes - Economics and Financing in Education, and School Leadership in the 21st Century - at McDaniel College towards her Masters in Educational Administration.

Kim Dorman earned graduate credit for School Leadership in the 21st Century, offered by McDaniel College in Westminster.

Susan James, a 35-year teaching veteran, took two classes through The Learner’s Edge, one in Reading and on in Students’ Learning Difficulties; in August, she is taking a course in working with The Struggling Student.  Also, James attended a “Soar to Success” reading conference to learn to teach below grade-level students with updated materials and methods.  

 Jodi Wendel, a Learning Support teacher at Maple Avenue Middle School, took two graduate classes through the University of St. Thomas: Knowing What You Know: Summarizing Savvy, a class geared toward helping students put their learning into their own words succinctly and accurately, and Differentiated Learning: How to Teach to Varying Ability Levels.

Dana Nelson earned six graduate credit for Helping Students Become Self-Directed Learners and Including Students with Special Needs in the Classroom, both offered by Indiana Wesleyan University.

Jan Purnell earned six graduate credits by studying What Great Teachers Do and Instructional Strategies that Work through the University of St. Thomas, Minnesota.

Rolling Acres teacher Jen Yingling recently completed her graduate level Reading Specialist Practicum, a six-credit clinic offered by McDaniel College in Westminster for struggling readers in Maryland. 

High School English and Drama teacher Michael Baker taught at the Academy at the Eichelberger Performing Arts Center and directed six shows for them.

LHS Agriculture teacher Jesse Brandt took took three graduate classes at Penn State University Park -- Communications Methods and Media, Leadership Practices, and Introduction to Research Methods -- and also attended the PAAE (Pennsylvania Association of Agricultural Educators) summer convention.   

 High School Librarian and Media Specialist Kathy Benoski  completed Helping Students become Self- Directed Learners Indiana Wesleyan University and is currently studying Learning Differences and Assessment to Improve Student Learning, both through Indiana Wesleyan.  She is also studying Teaching with Technology, a one credit graduate course through the University of St. Thomas. 

High School Social Studies teacher Kathy Hevner earned graduate credit in Learning Differences:  Effective Teaching with Learning Styles & Multiple Intelligences from Indiana Wesleyan University. 

Math teacher Tim Hoke earned three graduate credits in Classroom Management from University while serving as Associate Director for Summer Discovery at Michigan, a University of Michigan learning program in Ann Arbor.

Brenda Lyter, Family and Consumer Sciences teacher, attended the 2007 Governor's Institute on Financial Education from July 8-13.

LHS Biology teacher Wendy Norton took two graduate courses this summer, Issues in Education, and Educational Assessment both through Wilkes University.

Science colleague and high school chemistry teacher Amy Shermeyer earned six graduate credits for Teaching Kids with Learning Difficulties in the Regular Classroom and Achieving Success with Difficult Parents and Difficult Situations, both from the University of Colorado.

Eight members of the Littlestown Education Association studied at the Pennsylvania State Education Association’s weeklong seminar at Gettysburg College which was offered for graduate credit through Indiana University of Pennsylvania.   Studying the legal foundations and current practices of collective bargaining were High School Vocal Music Teacher Tom Welch and Fourth Grade Teacher Rachael Wire, a Littlestown High School ‘9X graduate.

Attending the Grievance Procedures School were veteran Art Teacher Sally Becker, Junior English Teacher Jenn Yutzy, and former LEA president and LHS Graphics teacher Thom Leib.  LEA President and Kindergarten Teacher Tina Motts and LEA Vice President and Third Grade Teacher Diane Bair attended the Leadership School; Senior English Teacher Patrice Smith studied the Labor Movement and Communications.
